Mid-Atlantic Committee on the Ocean Activities
Save the date for the 2021 Mid-Atlantic Ocean Forum May 3 – 6
The 2021 Ocean Forum will be virtual again this year to respect the health and welfare of participants as our country continues to endure the COVID-19 pandemic. While no technology can replace the in-person sidebar conversations, webinar conferencing will allow participants to ask questions of presenters and give their input to discussions. To allow more flexibility in scheduling participation, the 2021 Ocean Forum will be held over the course of one week with half-day opening and closing days, and topic-based breakout sessions scheduled during the course of the interim days. Registration information will be available in March.
Work groups have been busy since the 2020 Ocean Forum! The October 2020 MARCO News reported the links to the January – June progress reports, and this issue reports that the July – December 2020 progress reports have been published on the work group webpage. The MACO Newsletter released in November 2020 included MACO’s response to the stakeholder input received from the 2020 Ocean Forum. Some stakeholders have joined a work group and helped to create the work group’s work plans for 2021, also published on the work group webpage. Keep an eye on the website event calendar for upcoming webinars organized by some of the work groups.
MARCO and MACO are committed to listening and incorporating information from the widest possible set of stakeholders to better understand and address injustices and inequities. As reflected in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice Statement, MACO will ensure its work reflects a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice (DEIJ), as well as addresses the needs of stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and industries. Read the full statement to learn about steps MACO is taking to fulfill these commitments through its activities. MARCO fully supports the DEIJ Statement and is committed to taking the actions identified, and continuing to work with MACO to examine and modify its activities to ensure they do not perpetuate injustices.
